About

What is Juneteenth?

1865

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This historic day marks the true end of slavery in the United States and stands as a powerful symbol of liberation, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality. Today, Juneteenth is honored across the nation with reflection, serving as both a remembrance of the past and a call to build a more just future. Juneteenth is celebrated with community gatherings that include parades, festivals, music, and educational events honoring African American history and culture. Many communities host cookouts, family reunions, and public ceremonies that promote unity, reflection, and celebration of freedom. It's a day filled with joy, remembrance, and a renewed commitment to justice and equality. This is not just a celebration for African Americans and blacks but for all people to rejoice in the end of the abhorent practice of slavery.

Today

What to Expect.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, history, and resilience, marking the day - June 19th, 1865 - (As per the proclamation signed in 2001 by former Governor Kempthorne, Idaho celebrates Juneteenth the third Saturday in June each year) when the last enslaved African Americans in the U.S. were finally informed of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was finally recognized as a Federal Holiday in 2021 when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed into law. It is a time to reflect, honor the past, and celebrate progress, unity, and culture within our community.
